G-Town beats Harvard 86-70.
Georgetown (GU) Hoyas junior guard Chris Wright, a Bowie, MD native, scored a career high 34 points on Wednesday, Dec. 23rd; leading GU to a win over Harvard University.
Wright's 34 points were the highest point total ever recorded for a Georgetown player under sixth year coach John Thompson III. He scored 21 of his 34 points in the second half and shot 61 percent from the field, connecting on 13 of 21 shots. The 6-1 guard also collected 6 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.
The Hoyas head coach was more concerned with his teams 20 turnovers than Wrights career high. Its not okay, said Thompson after the game. We dont want to trade turnovers for steals; thats not how were built, in reference to GUs 21 total steal count for the game.
This offensive outburst by Wright could be a sign that he is poised to become a 1st round draft pick in next summers NBA draft. Notice the emphasis on could, because his 6-1 frame would mean he needs to prove that he can play point guard and defend point guards at the pro level. The restraints typically put on college players individual games by their coaches, tend to prevent star players from dropping 30 plus in a college game.
Sophomore center Greg Monroe proved to be a good compliment to Wright, posting a double double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Monroe has been the Hoyas leader this year, averaging 15 points and 9 rebounds per game.
Wright, who attended St. Johns Catholic HS in Washington D.C., is averaging 11.7 ppg this year. If Georgetown can keep their starting five healthy, they should be able to get deep into the NCAA tournament in March. Although with a loss to a team like Old Dominion, it shows that they tend to play down or up to the level of competition that the other team brings, which is not a good thing. Coach Thompson needs to make sure theyre ready to play every night, and not take a night off when a team like ODU comes to town. Especially for guys like Monroe and Wright who are looking towards pro careers in the near future. Pro scouts definitely look at your 34 point games, but they also look at your win loss record, and what you do in the NCAA tournament. The Hoyas next game is on December 31st at the Verizon Center against St. Johns University.
